PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably contain an article supplied from the side portion of a carton by an article supply unit in the carton held by a packaging paper holding apparatus for holding the packaging paper in a side open state, to which the article is supplied from the side portion of the packaging paper by the article supply unit. SOLUTION: This holding apparatus has support members 21, 22 for supporting a carton (packaging paper) 7 and a pressing piece 3 for pushing an underside flap 52a of the carton 7 obliquely downward. Suckers 23, 24 are disposed below the carton 7, and the underface 51a of the carton is sucked by these suckers 23, 24.
