1,151,752. Controlling vehicle headlamps. PROJECTEURS CIBIE. 4 Aug., 1966 [3 Sept., 1965], No. 34966/66. Heading H4D. The Specification describes a system for automatically varying the vertical angle of a vehicle's headlamps in response to the detected elevation of an oncoming vehicle's headlamps. Thus whereby vehicle V, Fig. 1, would normally illuminate the road just in front of it and miss vehicle V 1 , in accordance with the invention, its hadlamp beam is raised through an angle α 1 in response to the high headlamps of vehicle V 1 . The headlamp P, Fig. 4, may be pivoted about K under the control of worm V and nut e. Photo-electric detection means carried by the headlamp comprises a lens O focusing the oncoming vehicle's headlamp on to an arrangement of three strip photo-cells A, B, C arranged vertically. The servo mechanism is such that the headlamps of the lowest oncoming vehicle is focused on narrow central photo-cell C. Thus each photo-cell output is fed to a differential amplifier D, E, F where its illumination is compared with that of ambient light photo-cell X. When the result of the comparison yields a high enough signal respective ones of trigger circuits G, H, I feed signals to logic circuit L. Circuit L causes the energization of appropriate ones of relays R 1 , R 2 , R 3 to energize worm motor M and cause the correcting tilting of the headlamp. When photo-cells A, B, C are inoperative, relay R 4 and contacts C 1 , C 2 , C 3 with nut-attached wiper b cause energization of the motor M to bring the headlamp to a predetermined position. |
