[Also in Division G2] Photosensitive polycarbonamides of the general formula where Q is the residue of a synthetic linear thermoplastic polycarbonamide, the terminal groups being attached to the bracketed radicals, n 1 and n 2 are 0, 1 or 2 and their sum is 1 to 4, are prepared by heating a mixture of the polycarbonamide and p-benzoylphenyl glycidyl ether at 20‹ to 200‹ C., the amount of ether being sufficient to substitute 0À02 to 0À33 moles of ether per 1000 grams of polyamide. Suitable polyamides are condensation products of dicarboxylic acids and diamines or their salts, of aminocarboxylic acids or their lactams or of interpolymers of these types. Reaction may be effected in a solvent and the product separated by adding a liquid in which it is insoluble, or the solution of reactants may be cast as a film which is dried and heated to effect reaction. In the latter case, the product may be purified by dissolving in a solvent, e.g. methanol and precipitating, e.g. with acetone. In their application to printing (see Division G2), the products may be mixed with materials which increase photosensitivity, e.g. N,N<SP>1</SP>- hexamethylene-bis-acrylamide and other bisacrylamides, and with polymerization inhibitors and heat stabilizers, e.g. methylene blue, pyrogallol, quinone and hydroquinone. |
