The crystalline relief structure known as "spangle" is prevented from appearing on hotgalvanized steel strip by coding the zinc-coated strip, before the coating has begun to crystallise, by a dry method and more rapidly than can be achieved by coding means employing air at room temperature, from a condition in which the zinc is still molten to a temperature below that at which it would normally crystallise. This is preferably done by passing the coated strip through cooled rollers 8, 9 after it emerges from the galvanizing bath and at a height intermediate between the bath surface and the point where spangle would otherwise appear on the upwards-moving strip. Rollers 8, 9 even the thickness of the zinc coating and give the surface of the coating a finish corresponding to their own. They may be moved apart and together, or adjusted vertically and may meet either with their centres at the same level or vertically staggered. The vertical and horizontal adjustments for the rollers may be independent of those for each other, or may be linked so that a horizontal or vertical adjustment can be made using one control for both rollers. |
