The proposal is concerned with the manufacture of a metal plate/carbon fibre composite. The process involves the continuous winding of carbon fibre onto a reel of metal sheet while the metal is melted in a narrow strip extending across the full width of reel in high frequency magnetic field. First the carbon fibre (03) is coated with binding material (24), which can bee zinc, aluminum, etc. Then the carbon fibre is spread between rollers with decreasing gaps between them (21) and arranged by a laying-down/fixing adaptor (30) which moves at right angles to the fibre. The carbon fibre mat (03) is temporarily fixed to the metal plate (40) by compressed air. A high-frequency heating apparatus (50) is used to melt a full-width, narrow band of the metal plate, while the fixed carbon fibre (03) is embedded, using a support-embedding roller (45), which is lifted to provide tension, and/or a ceramic embedding roller (55). Temporary fixing is also possible using the air leaving the pneumatic cylinder (31) of the laying down/fixing adaptor (30). Deoxidizing chemical may be sprayed into this air. In the proposed equipment the metal plate is stored on the two drums (41,42). The carbon fibre is stored on drums (01) equipped with a brake (02). A coating-spreading unit (20) contains binding material (24) inn a feed tank (22) equipped with heating elements (25). Binding material feed units (23) are located below the storage tanks (22). These are followed by pairs of rollers (21) with decreasing gaps between them and the laying down-fixing unit (30) containing a pneumatic cylinder (31) with row of nozzles (32,33). Grooved rollers (35) are located below. Above the metal plate (40) a high frequency heating unit (50) and compression rollers (55) and/or below it a support-embedding roller (45) can be found. The resulting carbon fibre reinforced metal plate can be used in the traditional way, but due to the possibility of welding and (limited) flexibility, it can also be used for support, cladding structures, vehicle bodies or as a half-finished product to replace sheet, sheet metal cells or rolled products. |
