1,269,314. Glass melting furnaces. AIR REDUCTION CO. Inc. 20 March, 1970 [4 April, 1969], No. 13617/70. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C1] A furnace for producing refined glass from raw glass-making materials comprises a glass tank having a feed-opening 70 through which the materials can be fed into the tank, an outlet for molten glass from the tank, at least one air-fuel burner 72 arranged to direct an air-fuel flame into the tank, and an oxy-fuel burner 65 arranged to direct an oxy-fuel flame 66 at a downwardly sloping angle into the tank from a level below the level of the air-fuel burner, in a direction generally against the normal flow of raw glass-making materials from the feed-opening to the outlet. The oxy-fuel burner is preferably directed downwardly at an angle of about 7 degrees to the horizontal. The oxy-fuel burner or burners, if more than one is provided, are directed so that their products of combustion 67 impinge upon the raw glass-making materials 69 on the surface of the molten glass in the tank and drive them against the general direction of movement of molten glass in the tank.
|
