[Also in Division F2] Apparatus for securing a pierce nut N upon a plate P comprises a die 44 having a plate supporting surface 52 with a die cavity having a polygonal throat 54 communicating with a slug chamber 46, metal deforming means 58 located in the die cavity adjacent the throat and extending across corner regions of the throat and pressing means 40 for driving the polygonal shank 18 of a pierce nut N having leading cutting edges 22 through a plate mounted on the surface 52 to excise a polygonal slug from the plate and drive it into the slug chamber 46 whilst the metal deforming means 58 engage and displace the metal of the corners of the nut shank firmly against the underside of the plate as the shank advances into the slug chamber. As described the head and shank of a nut N or a threadless bush are both polygonal with the longitudinal corners of the shank and head unaligned (Fig. 1, not shown). The metal deforming means consist of the exposed edges 58 of a hard metal sleeve 56 within the cavity. Dome 42 deforms the excised slug so that it will not jam on ejection from the cavity by means of compressed air through channel 50. The shape of the press and die are such that the final action before withdrawal of the press is the embossing of the plate P about the fastened nut N (60, Figs. 5, 6, not shown). Pin 48 locates the nut within the press. The press may comprise separate elements (62, 64, Figs. 7-9) for driving the nut and embossing the plate. The slug may be deformed by a pin (76, Figs. 14, 15, not shown) extending through the nut and connected to the nut driving part of the press by a lost motion device (80). |
