PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to obtain a high luminance image maximally utilizing emitted luminous flux from a light source, by providing a polarizing beam splitter, a polarization rotary element converting an unwanted polarization component from the polarizing beam splitter to a desired polarization component and a reflection means between the light source and a light separation means. SOLUTION: Light outgoing from the light source 1 is separated into a p- polarization component and an s-polarization component by the polarizing beam splitter 2, and the required polarization component, whose way is converted by an advance or reflection means 5. Further, the unwanted polarization component, whose way is converted by the straight propagation or reflection means 5 after it is converted into the desired polarization component by passing through the polarization rotary element 23 to be made incident on the light separation means 8. Then, all light made incident on the polarizing beam splitter 2 are made incident on a liquid crystal light valve as the required light. Thus, a high luminance display maximally utilizing the emitted luminous flux from the light source 1 is realized. |
