A cutting machine comprises means 18, 19 for supporting material 17, e.g. cloth, substantially horizontally for cutting, cutting means 10, hold-down means 22 vertically movable relative to the material 17, means 47 continuously biasing the hold-down means 22 away from engagement with the material 17, and opposing means for urging the holddown means 22 into engagement with the top of the material 17 to exert a downward force thereon. The cutting means comprises a reciprocable blade 10, driven by an electric motor 11, and passing through a passage 31, 33 in the hold-down means, Fig. 2. An annular member 22 contacts the material 17 and is mounted for limited universal movement on a member 28 which is rigid with a cylindrical member 29 slidable vertically on a component 30. The latter is fixed to a frame 37 which is vertically locatable on rods 34, 35, or detachable extensions thereof, in accordance with the thickness to be cut. Springs 47 constantly bias the member 22 away from the material 17, while pneumatic pressure entering a chamber 50 through a flexible hose 52 may hold the member 22 in operative engagement. A regulating valve (55), Fig. 5 (not shown), may provide automatically or under manual control a pulsating pressure, and a damage-preventing coating may be applied to the member 22.</p> |
