PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such problem that it is hard to generate a write discharge itself in a conventional driving method and the write discharge not completed easily causes a write defect in the case of a short write time even through it is generated. SOLUTION: The potential difference between a scanning electrode to which a scanning pulse is applied in a write period and a data electrode to which a data pulse is not applied is larger than the discharge start voltage between the scanning electrode and the data electrode, and write auxiliary discharge is generated between the scanning electrode and the data electrode, and the potential difference between the scanning electrode to which a scanning pulse is applied in a write period and a maintaining electrode is smaller than the discharge start voltage between the scanning electrode and the maintaining electrode, and discharge is not generated when a data pulse is not applied to the data electrode.
