PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To preclude an angle error in an electrical angle of a subordinate signal from being generated affected by an assembling error, sensitivity dispersion in a photo-receiving element, illumination unevenness of an LED and the like, so as to realize detection of highly precise and high resolution. SOLUTION: The photo-receiving element 700 has four groups of photo- receiving cell arrays comprising an A-group 18, B-group 28, C-group 38 and D-group 48 divided into four groups by dead zones substantially orthogonally, and the four groups of the photo-receiving cell arrays are arranged to bring photocurrent signals output therefrom into periodic signals having phases different each other, in this optical encoder.
