Bicyclic compounds (I) containing a heterocyclic ring, their optical and geometric isomers, their salts, compositions containing them, are new. Bicyclic compounds of formula (I) containing a heterocyclic ring, their optical and geometric isomers, their salts, compositions containing them, are new. R1 = H, CH3, or -(CH2)s-OR4; R2 = -(CH2)t-OR5; -X-Y = a group of formula (i) - (ix); Z' = a ring of formula (x) - (xiv) such that when Z' is (xi), (xii), or (xiii), then X-Y may not be (iii) or (iv); R3 = 4-8C alkyl chain substituted by one or more OH (optionally protected by acetoxy, methoxy, ethoxy, trimethylsilyloxy, tert butyldimethylsilyloxy, tetrahydropyranyloxy), lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, halo, or CF3, one or more C atoms in the chain may be replaced by O, S, or N optionally substituted by lower alkyl and which may further contain unsaturations, the group R3 being meta or para to the X-Y chain; s, t = 1 or 2; R4, R5 = H, acetyl, benzoyl, trimethyl silyl, tert butyl dimethyl silyl, or tetrahydro pyranyl; R6 = H or lower alkyl; W = O, S, CH2, or NH optionally substituted by lower alkyl; R7 = H or lower alkyl; and R8 = H, lower alkyl, or halo.
