PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of attaining the miniaturization and reduction in weight under a condition free from troubles as for optical characteristics as compared with a transmission type by using a dichroic prism capable of attaining a color separation function and a color synthesis function with scarcely any difference in strength as a color separation/color synthesis element. SOLUTION: As for the dichroic prism 1 functioning as the color separation/ color synthesis element, by devising a multi-layered film as for a red dichroic film 1r and a blue dichroic film 1b, the maximum reflectance of the polarization component of one of S-polarized light and P-polarized light is >=80% of the maximum reflectance of the other polarization component, and by using the prism 1 with the aforesaid characteristics, polarization dependency is reduced. Thus, the reflection characteristics of the polarization component at the color separating process is made equivalent to the reflection characteristics of the polarization component at color-synthesizing the light which is made incident again after being modulated by reflection type liquid crystal panels 3R, 3G and 3B. |
