PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic meter reading system which can easily perform communicating condition setting work as much as possible, following an increase in the number of slave station. SOLUTION: In an automatic meter reading system which is provided with a master station, which can communicate with a headquarters station via a public telephone network, slave stations which are constituted in such a way that the stations can communicate with the master station in accordance with prescribed communication conditions through radio channels, and metering devices which can respectively communicate with the slave stations and constituted to set communicating conditions for the master and slave stations, the master and slave stations are respectively provided with storing means, each of which stores communicating condition setting data which constitute part of the communicating condition and are set at every station, and a setting start operating means. When the setting start operating means is operated (step 21), the stations communicate the communicating condition setting data stored in each storing means with each other, by using a channel which is prespecfied to be used exclusively for setting (step 22) and automatically set the communicating condition (step 25).
