PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To check the stability of an MR element in the state of initial magnetic domain about both cases when a reproducing current is applied and not applied to the MR element in the leaked magnetic field of the recording current for a recording head. SOLUTION: An evaluation signal is recorded (step 102), and the current is made to flow (step 103) into the recording head for giving the change to the stage of magnetic domain of the MR element part. At this time, the reproducing current is kept to be applied on the MR element part. After that, the evaluation signal is read out until the time attaining the prescribed number of times of reading (steps 104-105). Next, at the tine of dummy write, the evaluation signal is read out until the time attaining the prescribed number of times of reading (steps 108-109) without applying the reproducing current to the MR element part, and the difference in the values when the reproducing current is applied to the MR element part at the time of dummy write and when the reproducing current is not applied to the MR element part at the time of dummy write, is obtained (step 114) and when this difference is within the specific range, the goods are decided as nondefective.
