PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pattern recognizing device and its method, capable of extracting the most probable category (even if it is covered with a probable candidate list mentioned before) in terms of each ground by introducing a group concept, and outputting it as a recognizing result. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a means 1 for inputting a pattern which has to be recognized, a means 2 for calculating the similarity of each category by collating the inputted pattern with a prescribed dictionary information, a means 4 for extracting a category for acquiring highest similarity belonging to each group from the collating result and a means 5 for outputting the identification code of the category extracted.
