PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk reproducer which can easily decide the control voltage with which the intensity of the focus error signal received from a VCA is kept in its prescribed range and can shorten the time required for gain control in order to shorten the time when a disk is mounted and its reproduction is started. SOLUTION: When the intensity of the focus error signal that is amplified by an amplifier 5 gets continuously twice out of its prescribed range, the intensity value of both control voltage and focus error signal are stored in a memory 9. When one of both intensity value stored in the memory 9 is smaller than its prescribed value and the other intensity value is larger than its prescribed value, the value of control voltage is set at an intermediate level between two levels of control voltage and the gain control is carried out.
