PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color display device in which the picture element density is enhanced, color irregularity and distortion are prevented, and the productivity is improved. SOLUTION: An etching stopper 2 having light-transmission and insulation property is formed on one side surface 31 of a main substrate 5 and an EL element 6 is formed on the etching stopper 2. In addition, a substrate 17 for seal is stuck on one side surface 10 of the etching stopper 2, insulating liquid 18 is enclosed between the etching stopper 2 and the substrate 17 for seal, and the EL element 6 is protected thereby. The region including at least a display picture element region 34 on a main substrate 5 is subjected to an etching processing from the other surface 36 side of the main substrate 5 until the other surface 38 of the etching stopper 2 is exposed, and, on the other surface 38 of the etching stopper 2, a color filter substrate 4 is attached. Thereby, the distance between the EL element 6 of a color display device 1 and a color filter 8 is uniformly decreased, the occurrence of cracking of the main substrate 5 on a production of the color display device is prevented and the deterioration of the display quality due to the occurrence of a color irregularity and a distortion is prevented when the color display device 1 is used.
