The apparatus and control of a gas metal arc welding system without changing the heat input or physically moving the consumable electrode with respect to the workpiece. The apparatus comprises a constant voltage type power supply to provide weld current to the weld torch (B). A consumable electrode (10) supplied by a standard spool (12) and directed through the torch (B) towards workpiece (WP), is melted at arc (P). The torch contact tip mechanism of the torch assembly comprises an upper tip section (100) with a lower end (100a) and a lower tip section (102) with a lower end (102a). The two tip sections (100, 102) are separated by an air gap filled with insulating spacer (112) which also separates the tip sections (100,102) from the metal housing (120). Switch (SW1) is connected to upper tip section (100) and switch (SW2) is connected to lower tip section (102). Operating switches (SW1,SW2), during the welding process, controls the Effective Contact Tip to Workpiece Distance (CTWD) as a distance c between distances a and b.
