PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic endoscope system which is constituted in such a manner that ordinary light illumination and special wavelength light illumination may be selectively changed over and the electronic endoscope system which is constituted in such a manner, when an operator manipulating a scope desires the changeover of the illumination, the operator himself can not only carry out the change over but can carry out the lighting and putting out of a special wavelength light source as well. SOLUTION: The electronic endoscope system consists of the scope 10, an image pickup sensor 12 disposed at its distal end and an image signal processing unit 14 connected to the proximal end of the scope. Video signals are formed by an image signal processing unit in accordance with the pixel signals obtained by the image pickup sensor. The front side at the distal end of the scope is selectively illuminated by the ordinary light illumination and the special wavelength light illumination. The changeover of the ordinary light illumination and the special wavelength light illumination is executed by changeover switches (88, 90 and 92). If these changeover switches are kept operated for the prescribed time, the lighting or putting out of the special wavelength light source 38 is executed.
