An apparatus (10) for detecting chemicals (114) in a fluid includes a sorben t element (18) for sorbing said chemicals, said sorbing element (18) connected to a bi-directional pump (30) and to a detector (50). The bi-directional pum p (30) pumps fluid in a first direction (118, 112, 116a) through the sorbent material (28), thereby causing some of the chemicals (114) to accumulate on one side of the sorbent material (28). The bi-directional pump (30) is reversed so as to pump fluid in a second opposite direction (132, 134, 136), thereby causing the accumulated chemicals (114) to be carried to the detecto r (50). Another apparatus (10) for collecting and detecting chemicals (114) contained in a fluid includes a sorbent element (18), at least one chemical sensor (58), a first pump (30) for pumping fluid through the sorbent element (18) and a second pump (64) for pumping fluid to the chemical sensor (58). T he sorbent element (18) contains therein a sorbent material (28) and a heating element (82). The first pump (30) pumps fluid into the sorbent element (18) thereby collecting the chemicals (114) on the sorbent material (28). The heating element (82) provides heat to the sorbent element (18) to desorb the chemicals (114) from the sorbent material (28). The chemicals (114) desorbed from the sorbent material (28) are then pumped out of the sorbent element (1 8) and to the chemical sensor (58).
