PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prolong service life of a mechanical seal and expand a limit for practical use in which it can be favorably used by suppressing an increase of load on a slide face even for high pressure sealing fluid. SOLUTION: This mechanical seal is provided with a non-rotating seal ring 31 which is stored in an annular recessed part 12 of a seal housing 1, whose outer peripheral face 31a is fixedly sealed and fitted in an inner peripheral face 12a of the annular recessed part 12 through an O ring 33 and a mating ring 32 which rotates together with a rotary shaft 2 and slides with a slide projection 311 of the seal ring 31, and an outer peripheral side of mutual slide faces S is a space A in a machine to be sealed. A support projection 312 is formed on an inner peripheral side on a rear face 31b of the seal ring 31, and the support projection 312 comes into contact with an end face 12b in the annular recessed part 12 of the seal housing 1. The seal ring 31 is deformed by pressure in the space A in the machine using an outside diameter of the support projection 312 as a support point, and a wedgelike clearance opening on an outer peripheral side is formed on the slide face S so that opening force acting on the slide face S increases.
