PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus of detecting the filled amount of a gelled negative electrode active material, thereby enabling easy management and control of the amount of the gelled negative electrode active material. SOLUTION: A method of detecting the amount of a gelled negative electrode active material is disclosed, which comprises processes making a contact terminal 4 in contact with a circumference of a battery case 3 filled with a gelled negative electrode material 2 and having an opening 3a at one end; moving and inserting a current collecting rod 7 into the battery case 3 through the opening 3a toward the gelled negative electrode active material 2; measuring the voltage between the collecting rod 7 being moved and inserted and the contact terminal 4; and detecting the amount depending on whether the voltage is detected or not at a prescribed position through which a front end of the collecting rod 7 is moved and inserted.
