PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reader that can very accurately conduct electric correction with respect to a subscanning direction, suppress luminous quantity fluctuation in the main scanning with a simple configuration and obtain an excellent image without contrast unevenness even in the carried document reading mode at the fixed point of its document platen for a long time. SOLUTION: In the case of a 2nd mode where a mirror base 20 comes to a standstill and data of a document are read by carrying the original, a light source 3 of a scanning optical system 3 is moved at a moving original read position at which a 1st reference member is placed above a document platen glass 12 prior to reading the original to correct shading, and then the light source 3 is moved at a fixed original read position and a 2nd reference member is used to correct shading at the outside of an original read section in the main scanning direction. A heat dissipation metallic member 11 is in direct contact with the light source 3 or a fan is driven to cool the light source 3 by air.
