A catalyst having a ceramic carrier and a catalytic active component dispers ed and carried thereon, wherein the surface of each particle of the ceramic carrier is individually covered by a thin film of alumina and the catalytic active component is carried on the thin film. The catalyst may be prepared b y a method comprising immersing the ceramic carrier in a solution of a metal compound containing aluminum, prefiring the impregnated carrier, immersing t he prefired product in hot water followed by drying, then subjecting the dried product to final firing, and finally allowing the alumina thin film on the surface of the carrier to carry the catalytic active component thereon. The catalyst, although it has an alumina thin film formed on the surface thereof , has an increased pore diameter, a enhanced porosity and a reduced pressure loss.
