A method for decomposing a chlorine-containing organic compound contained in an exhaust gas, which comprises contacting the chlorine-containing organic compound with nitrogen dioxide contained in the exhaust gas or added thereto from outside in the presence of a catalyst at 100 to 450 DEG C, to thereby decompose the chlorine-containing organic compound through oxidation by the nitrogen dioxide; a catalyst for use in the method which comprises a titanium oxide, a molybdenum oxide and a vanadium oxide as main components in a Ti/Mo/V atomic ratio of 99 to 70/0.5 to 15/0.5 to 15; A method for treating a used catalyst comprising contacting the used catalyst with a NO2-containing gas to thereby decompose a chlorine-containing organic compound through oxidation by NO2. The method for decomposing a chlorine-containing organic compound (DXNs) can be used for decomposing DXNs with high decomposition percentage at a low decomposition temperature, while minimizing the effect of SOx, and the method for treating a used catalyst can be employed for rendering DXNs adhered to a used catalyst to be harmless.
