PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably regulate the substrate gap of a liquid crystal display device for a long time by making use of the characteristics of spacer beads that the beads can accurately control the substrate gap of the liquid crystal display device, and to provide a liquid crystal display device having excellent display quality and a method of producing the device. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is equipped with a liquid crystal layer 30 and a pair of substrates 10, 20 holding the liquid crystal layer 30 and having electrodes, and one substrate 10 is provided with spacer beads 16 which regulate the gap between the pair of substrates constant. The spacer beads 16 are disposed on a coating film 14 consisting of a photosensitive material applied on the substrate 10 and partly embedded and fixed in the film. The coating film 14 consisting of a photosensitive material is formed to cover at least the effective screen of the liquid crystal display device.
