PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium which stores defect management information for recording real-time data, its defect managing method, and a recording method for real-time data. SOLUTION: This recording medium stores information, showing whether linear replacement defect management for replacing defects on the recording medium with data in a margin area so as to record real-time data in a recording area. Consequently, the real-time data can be recorded and/or reproduced by not performing linear replacement, when the real-time data are recorded while maintaining compatibility with defect-managing method by a method prescribed by the current DVD-RAM standards, i.e., while giving notice of the presence of a block which is not replaced linearly.
