1320649 Imidazoisoquinoline diones and their preparation BAYER AG 2 Sept 1971 [3 Sept 1970] 40981/71 Heading C2C Imidazoisoquinoline diones of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> represents hydrogen, alkyl, halogen, nitro, alkoxy or aryl which may be substituted by alkyl, halogen, haloalkyl or nitro, and R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> independently represent hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or halogen, or, together with the intermediate two carbon atoms of the imidazole ring, represent a benzene ring which may be substituted by halogen, nitro or trifluoromethyl, may be obtained by reacting a phthalic acid halide of the formula wherein X is halogen, in the presence of a polar diluent or solvent and in the presence of a base, with an imidazole compound of the formula The reactants are preferably employed in substantially molar amounts and the reaction is suitably effected at a temperature of - 10‹ to 150‹ C. The solvent employed should have a dielectric constant of at least 4À8, e.g. DMF or acetonitrile, and the base employed is suitably a tertiary amine having a basicity constant pK 6 of not more than 8À7. The above compounds may also be chlorinated by the direct action of chlorine. The compounds possess herbicidal properties and may be formulated, optionally with other additives, and applied in conventional manner. |
