PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic tool diameter measuring method which can be stably used for a long period, which is capable of constantly correctly measuring the tool diamter at the time of actual machining without having effects of a held condition or measured position of a tool, and in which high machining precision can be stably obtained. SOLUTION: While a tool, that is an end mill 2, for example, held on a main shaft 1 of a machine tool is rotated, the main shaft 1 and an optical sensor 5 comprising a light projector 3 and a light receiver 4 facing each other are relatively moved in such a way that a center axial line 1a of the main shaft 1 perpendicularly crosses an optical path 6 of the optical sensor 5, and the diameter of the end mill 2 is automatically measured based on relative position information of the main shaft 1 and the optical sensor 5 at the timing when shielding of the optical path 6 by the end mill 2 during their relative movement is started, and at the timing when the shielding is ended.
