PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optically active hydroxyethylaminopropane derivative having selective and strong relaxant effect on uterine smooth muscle and relaxant effect on ureter smooth muscle, useful as an inhibitor for threatened abortion and premature delivery, a pain abatement for urinary concrement and a lithagoque accelerator. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I or its pharmacologically acceptable salt. The compound is produced by condensing a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III or its salt, reducing the condensed substance, O-alkylating the reduced substance with a haloacetic acid ester or a haloacetic acid amide, deprotecting the O-alkylated substance and hydrolyzing the deprotected substance.
