PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the strength as for an automotive energy absorbing member, simultaneously to prevent cracking at the time of being applied with a compressive load of collision in the horizontal direction and to secure a high energy absorption amount. SOLUTION: This energy absorbing member is composed of an aluminum alloy extruded material having a composition containing 0.5 to 1.6% Mg, 4.0 to 7.0% Zn, 0.005 to 0.3% Ti and 0.05 to 0.6% Cu, moreover containing one or two or more kinds among 0.2 to 0.7% Mn, 0.03 to 0.3% Cr and 0.05 to 0.25% Zr, and the balance Al with inevitable impurities, and the same has a fibrous structure and is also subjected to overaging treatment so as to have proof stress >=0.7 times the maximum value of the proof stress obtainable by executing aging treatment.
