PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dampening water composition which can substitute an isopropylalcohol family and is friendly to operating environments and is safely used and shows outstanding printing stability and also a dampening water composition for a lithographic printing plate which shows a low dynamic surface tension and displays good and stable printability even under the conditions of rapidly rotating members and further, displays highly stable printability to a variety of inks and makes a high-quality printed matter available. SOLUTION: The dampening water composition is characterized in that it contains at least one kind of chemical compound represented by formula and a polyvinyl pyrolidone. R1O-(-CH2CH(CH3)-O-O)m-H-(I) (In the formula, R1 is a 3-8C alkyl group and m is an integer of 1-3).
