PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst large in both void size and void ratio, and reduced in pressure loss even if an alumina membrane is formed on the surface of the catalyst, and provide a method of manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: A catalyst wherein the surfaces of particles of a silicon- containing ceramic carrier are coated with an alumina membrane and a catalytically active component is supported on the surface of the alumina membrane is manufactured by (a) a pretreatment process wherein the silicon-containing ceramic carrier is heated to 1,000-1,500 deg.C to form a silicon oxide film, (b) a solution impregnating process wherein the carrier is immersed in a solution of an aluminum-containing metal compound, (c) a drying process heating and drying the impregnated carrier, (d) a calcining process for heating the dried carrier to 300-500 deg.C to bake the same to form an amorphous alumina membrane, (e) a heat treatment process for immersing the baked carrier in hot water at 100 deg.C and subsequently drying the heat-treated carrier, (f) a main baking process for baking the carrier thus treated at 500-1,200 deg.C and (g) a catalyst supporting process for supporting an active component on the alumina film on the surface of the carrier. |
