PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for the production of a naphthalene dinitrile compound stably over a long period in high yield by the ammoxidation of a dialkylnaphthalene compound or a dialkyltetralin compound. SOLUTION: The ammoxidation reaction is carried out by using a catalyst containing one or more oxides of metals selected from V, Mo and Fe and using >=20 mol of ammonia and >=20 mol of oxygen based on 1 mol of the dialkylnaphthalene compound and/or dialkyltetralin compound.
