PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machine tool provided with first and second headstocks and capable of processing a long work as well as a short one, by serving the second headstock as a tailstock, where necessary. SOLUTION: This machine tool 1 is provided with a first headstock 3 having a chuck for holding a work, and a second main headstock 4 which is oppositely disposed at the first headstock 3 and has a chuck for holding the work, wherein the chuck of the second headstock 4 is formed out of a chuck body 11 fixed to a main spindle, and a pawl plate 12 removably attached to the chuck body 11 by a lock mechanism, a work grasping pawl driving mechanism 14 is mounted which advances and retracts a work grasping pawl 12c on a pawl plate 12 in a direction orthogonal to the axis, a tailstock unit 27 removably attached to the chuck body 11 by the lock mechanism with the pawl plate 12 removed, and a quill driving device 30 is mounted which advances and retracts a quill 29 of the tailstock unit 27 axially by the work grasping pawl driving mechanism 14.
