PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fully enhance the resolution of an ultrasonic image. SOLUTION: A laminated multiple matching layer 1 is provided on a piezoelectric element 2. The acoustic matching layers 11, 12 and 13 of the multiple matching layer 1 are joined together by discharge plasma sintering, and intermediate layers formed by junction have each an acoustic impedance intermediate between those of the acoustic matching layers. The acoustic matching layers are joined together without use of an adhesive and the intermediate layers allow the acoustic impedances to vary smoothly to thereby minimize the decay of ultrasonic waves propagating through the multiple matching layer 1 and fully enhance the resolution of the ultrasonic image.
