PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily, rapidly and accurately measure a vertical clearance between a step board and a comb tooth part of an escalator. SOLUTION: A base 2 is placed on the step board 11, with a guide 7 brought into close contact along a rib part 13. The base 2 is brought into close contact with the upper part of the step board 11, and the lower end of a scale 3 is brought into close contact with the bottom face of a groove 12 to read the indicated value s1 of graduations 5 of the scale 3 at the edge of a through hole 6 of the base 2 at this time. In the state of the base 2 being pressed onto the step board 11, the scale 3 is pulled upward to bring the upper end of a contact shoe into contact with the lower face of the comb tooth part 21 to read the indicated value s2 of the graduations 5 at the end part of a through hole 6 at this time. The moving distance s=s2-s1 of the scale 3 is computed from two indicated values, and a vertical dimension ds between the upper face of the contact shoe 4 and the lower end of the scale 3 is added to the moving distance s to compute the distance d=s+ds of a clearance between the bottom face of the groove 12 and the lower face of the comb tooth part 21.
