PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ignition device for an internal combustion engine which can suppress spark energy to the necessary minimum limit without regulating energizing time to a primary winding and can suppress consumption of the electrode of an ignition plug. SOLUTION: The ignition device 1 for the internal combustion engine generates spark discharge in a manner that the action of a transistor 17 is controlled by an ECU 19 so as to disconnect a primary current i1 so that ignition high voltage introduced to a secondary winding L2 is applied to the ignition plug 13. For forcibly breaking spark discharge within spark discharge duration Tt, a thyristor enclosed in the ignition coil 15 is switched on by the ECU, both the ends of the primary winding L1 are short-circuited, and electric current is made to flow into the primary winding L1, so that spark discharge is disconnected. The excess supply of spark energy supplied to the ignition plug 13 can be suppressed, and the consumption of the electrode of the ignition plug 13 can be suppressed.
