PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain technique that a premixed compression self-ignition engine 100 is maintained in such a state that premixed compression self-ignition operation is surely carried out, and in particular, by appropriately performing starting/warming-up of the engine. SOLUTION: This engine is provided with an equivalence ratio setting means 12 to set the equivalence ration of the premixed gas M to be supplied to a combustion chamber 10, a spark ignition mans 13 to spark ignite the premixed gas M in the combustion chamber 10 and a detection means (a) to detect a non-compression self-ignition state such that the premixed gas M in the combustion chamber 10 does not burn by compression self-ignition. The engine is also provided with a speak ignition operation means 21 to set the equivalence ratio of the premised gas to be supplied to the combustion chamber 10 in a flame propagation range by activating the equivalence ratio setting means 12 and spark ignites the premixed gas in the combustion chamber 10 in a spark ignition period later than a TDC by activating the spark ignition means 13 in the case where a non-compression self-ignition state is detected.
