PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new optically active compound suitably useful as a liquid crystal display element, especially antiferroelectric liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by general formula (1) (R1 is an alkyl group;-CH2- groups existing in the these groups may be each independently substituted with -O-, -CO-O-, -C≡C- or -CH=CH-, R2 is an alkyl group and -CH3 at an alkyl chain terminal may be substituted with -CF3 or -CH2F; A1 is -CH2-, -CF2- or -CO-; A2 is 1,4-phenylene or 1,4-phenylene in which one or more hydrogen atoms are each independently substituted with F, Cl, Br or a trifluoromethyl group; A3 is an alkyl group or a fluorinated alkyl group; A4 is a single bond, -O- or -COO-; X is -COO-, -CH2O- or -OCH2-; (m) is an integer of 0 to 10; and C* is an asymmetric carbon atom).
