PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of remarkably improving capacity for treating garbage without changing the volume of a carbonization oven and provide a carbonization apparatus capable of easily realizing the method. SOLUTION: Garbage put in a carbonization oven at first is heated to reduce its volume at a temperature capable of reducing the volume for a prescribed time, subsequently new garbage is put in addition into a space left in the oven or enlarged space and heated for a prescribed time. The carbonization apparatus is installed with an input means for inputting an amount of the garbage to be inputted, a memory means for memorizing a prescribed calculation equation, a water content and a constant value of sensible heat and further an objective heating temperature and a constant value of the calorific value of the input means, a calculation means for calculating the heating times by using input data in the input means based on the calculation equation and the aforesaid constant value, and a control means for controlling the heating times by the heating means based on the calculated result of the calculation means.
