PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bending method and a bending machine capable of preventing a die from breaking and an overload from applying to a machine. SOLUTION: When an upper frame 3U is moved up/down and a work W is clamped with a press die 11 of the upper frame 3U and a support die 15 of a lower frame 3L, at the state the work W does not exist, the pres die 11 is abutted on the support die 15, the distance between the press die 11 and the support die 15 is measured by a measuring means 31 and is set as zero. The distance between the press die 11 and the support die 15, when the work W is actually clamped, is measured by a measuring means 31, a comparison/ discrimination part 61 of a NC device 51 compares the measured distance and the reference value for a plate thickness of the work W which is inputted into a memory 59 of the NC device 51, when discriminating the measured distance is larger than the reference value, working is immediately stopped as discriminating the work W is not carried in by one sheet in a normal way.
