An oral antiplaque composition comprising an orally acceptable vehicle and an effective antiplaque amount of 4-alkoxy substituted 2-hydroxy benzophenone compound having the following formula:where X, Y, X' and Y' represent hydrogen, and lower straight chain or branched C1-C4 alkyl radicals, C3-C6 cycloalkyls and R represents lower C1-C8 alkoxy radicals.
