PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display device capable of driving a liquid- crystalline material even at a low applied voltage. SOLUTION: A liquid-crystalline material having spontaneous polarization is filled into the space between alignment films 14, 15 disposed on separate glass substrates 2, 4 to form a liquid crystal layer 16. The size of the spontaneous polarization of the liquid-crystalline material is adjusted to <=1/2 of the maximum quantity of electric charges injected into each pixel when a switching element is on.
