PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmission system that employs error correction by which an error rate can accurately be evaluated. SOLUTION: An error correction coder 11 of a terminal station 1 inserts a value subjected to error correction coding calculations to a redundant coded byte and an electro-optic converter 12 transmits the resulting signal. A photoelectric converter 21 of a terminal station 2 converts an optical signal into an electric signal and an error correction decoder 22 applies error correction decoding to the electric signal. The error correction decoder 22 corrects an error up to 8 bytes in one sub frame but outputs an error correction failure flag on the occurrence of an error in 9 bytes or over in one sub frame in the error correction decoding because accurate error correction cannot be executed. A failure flag collection device 23 counts the error in the unit of 9 bytes on the occurrence of the failure flag.
