PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup system, where it is used by connecting an image pickup unit to a computer conducting image processing, that displays an operating state and a connecting state of the image pickup unit for a use, records them and prevents operation errors by the user. SOLUTION: The image pickup system is provided with a means by which the image pickup unit and the computer interconnected with each other mutually transmit/receive data, a means by which the image pickup unit or the computer detects, displays, records the operating state and the connection state of the image pickup unit, and a means that operates a device protecting the lens of the image pickup unit according to the result of detection.
