PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a device and to secure the stability of a head carriage. SOLUTION: Since the carriage main body 19 of the head carriage 18 is supported by a pair of guide shafts 35 and 36 in the directions of X1 and X2, a seeking operation can be executed in a more stable state. A lead screw 21 is installed so that it crossed the main body 19 at a position below the carriage main body 19 and it is engaged with the main body 19 through an engaged member 48 installed below the carriage main body 19. The rotary driving force of the lead screw 21 is transmitted to the carriage main body 19 through the engaged member 48. Thus, the lateral size of a magnetic disk device 11 is made small and the device 1 can be miniaturized by installing the lead screw 21 and a stepping motor 23 on the lower face of a frame 14.
