PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an adaptive error diffusion method for generating edge emphasizing halftone color while preventing emphasis of undesired moire. SOLUTION: This adaptive error diffusion method includes a step for receiving inputted digital picture data, a step for detecting the edge of the picture data by an edge detector 14, a step for generating noise-added picture data by adding noise to the picture data by a noise level deciding part 16 in accordance with the result of edge detection, a step for generating adaptive error diffusion data by changing the error diffusion in accordance with the noise-added picture data when changing error diffusion by an error diffusion processing block 12, and a step for generating output picture data from the adaptive error diffusion data.
