The map position display system has an electronics unit (101) including bus (107), microprocessor (105), circuit (113) and aerial (114) that measure map position and display a map (102). There is a direction locator (109) allowing the displayed map to be pointed in a required user direction. Direction locator comprises two perpendicular magneto-resistive films that produce signals determining magnetic north. Independent claims are also included for (a) the utilization method of the display system, and for (b) the orientation method.
